Daredevil Running on the Moon
AAAS: "'Daredevil' running could help astronauts maintain muscles in low gravity." This concept was inspired by “wall of death” carnival motorbike attractions, but could be a technique to simulate Earth-like gravity on the Moon. The problem is that long-term exposure to zero or low gravity creates atrophy of muscles + loss of bone mineral. "Running while harnessed to a treadmill is one tried-and-true option that astronauts aboard the International Space Station have employed for years." But this approach is awkward, fails to provide the same workout as striding under Earth's gravitation acceleration, + under at least zero gravity conditions showers are infeasible. "Researchers had two participants, one man and one woman, attempt to run inside a borrowed wall of death cylinder while harnessed to a counterbalance that mimicked the Moon’s gravity." Both participants appear young + fit to my eye, + there is a short but entertaining video accompanying the article. Now I'm thinking of what it would be like to play tennis on the Moon. Probably harder to get the serve to drop into the service box, except with an awful lot of topspin. Same problem for groundstrokes. Sorry, you picklers, I'm afraid pickle ball is out of the question.
